CREATE YOUR FUTURE SELF

Have you given any thought to your Future Self? Who will that person be? If you haven’t given it much thought, think about your former self and how that person differs from the person you are now.

Have you ever thought there was more to life than what you are currently living? Maybe you haven’t given your future self enough thought. I have been reading Dr. Benjamin Hardy’s book Personality Isn’t Permanent. It certainly had me thinking. I have my vision board, goals, and vision statement. But haven’t really compared my Former Self to my Present Self, and my Present Self to my Future Self. Dr. Hardy suggests that if you change your identity, over time it will become your personality. So, assume an identity of who you want to be.

This concept is very free-ing. Think of all of your mistakes from the past and limiting beliefs that are holding you back. You can have compassion for that old Former Self who made those mistakes or wasted time being in the fear mode because that Former Self didn’t have the knowledge that you have today.

The same goes for your Future Self. What knowledge do you think your Future Self would have that you don’t have today. Do you think the limiting beliefs and negative self-talk you have today would even affect your Future Self in the same way? How will your Future Self be different? He suggests making a list of traits of your Former Self, Present Self, and Future Self. I am including my list below.

“The only way to make your present better is to make your Future better…”
— Dan Sullivan

Give some real thought about who you want to be in 3 years. What is that person doing? How does that person feel/look? Who is around that person? Decide what future you want to focus on and pursue it. You get to choose!

Here are my traits for my Future/Present/Former self:

“Human beings are works in progress who mistakenly think they’re finished.”
— Daniel Gilbert

Make your own list! Figure out who you want to be in three years and what identity you will have to take on to be that person.
