WHAT ARE YOUR “REASONS?”

Like I said last week, our habits shape our lives more than we would like to think. Unfortunately, so do our excuses. Is there a go-to excuse that you seem to use almost automatically? Mine is I don’t have enough time or I’m too busy.

What’s the excuse you use to hit your snooze button when you don’t want to get up in the morning? I have an excuse for that too! Next time someone asks you to do something, or you didn’t do something that you had planned to do, listen to your excuse for it. What immediate thought do you have for not doing it?

In her book, Everything Is Figureoutable, Marie Forleo really puts this into perspective. If there is really something you want to do, you’ll do it without excuses. So, take a good look inside and notice what you are making excuses about. Maybe it’s something you don’t really want to do.

Do any of these sound familiar?

  • I need to start exercising again, but I’m just so busy with work and the kids. Can’t do it — no time.
  • My finances are a mess. No matter what I do, I can’t seem to get ahead. I’m just not a numbers person.
  • I really want to take that design class. It could open up a whole new career! But it’s too expensive, I can’t afford it.
  • I wish I could meet someone special. But I don’t have time for dating, I’m too old, and besides, the good ones are already taken.

I know I’ve said a few of those before! Can you see the excuses? These are little lies we tell ourselves to justify not taking action. We are draining our energy and our potential with these excuses. Get rid of flimsy excuses and regain your control and power to change.

Get rid of can’t and won’t from your vocabulary. If you say you can’t do (fill in the blank), you are really saying won’t. Which means you aren’t willing to do it. So, you either don’t want to do it, or you aren’t willing to take the chance or get out of your comfort zone.

So, next time you tell yourself (or someone else) that you didn’t do something, listen to your “reason”. Then, change your language and take action.
