Could this year have brought us any more uncertainty? Humans are wired to dislike uncertainty. Have you ever had an “AHA” moment? How did you feel? It’s a great feeling of satisfaction. Did you know that you also get a dopamine surge when that happens?

We are facing a lot of uncertainty right now…what’s the new normal going to be and when?…will I lose my job?…will Corona Virus ever go away?…will I get sick? A very interesting phenomenon happens when we don’t have all of the information. Many of us would rather believe something that may not be true than to not know the real answer. The Internet has definitely contributed to a false sense of “knowing” the truth.

“Groupthink” has also helped some people get over anxiety and depression of uncertainty. The real issue is to understand the true source of this kind of thinking and determine how reliable it is. Uncertainty has been shown to increase anxiety, depression, and acts of risky behaviors.

However, there are ways that uncertainty benefits us! When we face uncertainty, we should just sit with it for a while rather than look for the first answer we encounter. Basking in the moment of uncertainty can keep your mind open to learning and discovery. So, the next time you are working on a big dream or goal, and run across obstacles, or are afraid to take a risk, keep an open mind instead of immediately looking for the answer. Embrace the uncertainty.
